The fishing community at Kasensero landing site is in mourning following the brutal murder of two fishermen on Lake Victoria.
The victims, identified as Moses Kiggundu, 40, and Gitta Kasirye, 51, both residents of Kacungwa Zone in Kasensero Sub-county, were reportedly attacked by pirates while fishing on Saturday night. The attackers killed the fishermen, dumped their bodies into the water, and fled with their boat and engine, according to local reports.
The incident has reignited frustration among fishermen, who accuse security forces of failing to address the persistent threat of pirate attacks, often originating from Tanzania. Fishermen argue that the high cost of replacement engines has left them hesitant to venture into the lake, further impacting their livelihoods.
Local leaders highlighted that previous attempts to apprehend pirates have often failed, as arrested individuals are allegedly released without facing charges. Reports indicate that this year alone, nearly 90 engines have been stolen, and several fishermen have suffered injuries during pirate attacks.
Authorities in the area, including the Kasensero Town Council chairperson, have repeatedly called on the government to address the crisis. They expressed concerns that while illegal fishing remains a focus for law enforcement, the safety of fishermen continues to be overlooked.
Southern region police confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are underway. The stolen boat has not been recovered, further suggesting it was taken by the attackers. The bodies of the victims have been retrieved and sent for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid late-night fishing trips as a precaution against such attacks, though the community continues to demand stronger action to ensure their safety on the lake.
