Police in Lira District are searching for four family members accused of torturing their 25-year-old son, Isaac Oluk, leading to his death.
On September 5, 2024, Oluk, a resident of Apikongo Village in Itek Sub-county, Lira District, allegedly became violent under the influence of drugs and assaulted his younger sister, causing injuries. In response, Oluk’s father reportedly tied him to a tree with the help of a relative and severely beat him.
Officers from Abolet Police Outpost arrived at the scene and took Oluk to Barr Health Centre IV for treatment before transferring him to Lira Regional Referral Hospital. However, the family opted for a private clinic in Lira City, where Oluk was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police have identified the suspects, including Oluk’s father Samuel Oluk, younger sister Agnes Atala, and another relative, Denis Ojuka, all of whom are on the run.
The family is accused of trying to cover up the death by burying Oluk before a postmortem could be conducted. Police have since launched an investigation and are actively searching for the suspects.
Authorities condemned the actions, urging the community not to take the law into their own hands. The police are committed to ensuring justice in the case.
The North Kyoga Region recorded 222 murder cases in 2023, with 72 of these linked to assault, according to the police crime report. Nationally, the region ranked fifth in terms of murder cases.
