Romulus" tops China's box office chart

BEIJING, China | Xinhua | 20th Century Studios’ sci-fi thriller “Alien: Romulus” topped the Chinese mainland’s daily box office on Saturday, according to the China Movie Data Information Network.

The seventh installment of the successful “Alien” franchise, the movie grossed approximately 63.99 million yuan (about 8.95 million U.S. dollars) on its second day of screening.

It tells the story of a group of young space colonists who encounter the universe’s most terrifying life form while scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station.

Coming in second was the Japanese animation “Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram,” which raked in approximately 40.94 million yuan on Saturday.

Domestic crime film “Go for Broke” came in third with 36.87 million yuan in revenue on the day.

The total box office revenue on the Chinese mainland on Saturday hit 220.15 million yuan.  ■
