Michael Waigo Otika, a senior assistant accountant with the Adjumani District Local Government, has died in a motorcycle accident.
The accident occurred on Tuesday evening during light rain near Ruyo Guest House along the Adjumani-Gulu highway in Adjumani Town Council. Eyewitnesses report that Otika was riding in his lane from Adjumani Town when he collided with the rear of a vehicle that had improperly entered the highway, obstructing his path.
Police and Otika’s family have not yet released an official statement, as the incident took place later in the evening. Otika’s body has been taken to the mortuary at Adjumani General Hospital.
Adjumani District Local Government acknowledged his passing on its official Facebook page, with the Chief Administrative Officer announcing the loss and indicating that further details on the burial arrangements would be shared soon.
Following the news of his death, friends and colleagues expressed their condolences on social media. Many reflected on Otika’s impact, including colleagues in government and social work who noted the need for road safety improvements in the region.
Adjumani District has seen at least 26 fatalities and 71 serious injuries from road accidents in the past eight months, according to police. Causes cited include reckless driving, speeding, drunk driving, and failure to observe road signs.
