An 18-year-old Senior Four student from Kamwenge District, Uganda, recently gave birth during her Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations but remains determined to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.
Susan Asiimamukama, a student at Bwiizi Seed Secondary School in Bwiizi Sub-county, delivered a baby girl on October 14, shortly after completing her Chemistry exam.
Despite the challenges, Asiimamukama is committed to continuing her studies and fulfilling her goal of making a difference in her community through nursing.
Both mother and child are reported to be in good health, and Asiimamukama is hopeful about completing her remaining exams.
Her dedication has been recognized by her school’s head teacher, Festo Musinguzi, who praised her as one of the school’s top students and expressed confidence in her academic success. The school administration has also pledged its support to ensure she completes her exams smoothly.
At the time of reporting, Asiimamukama’s baby was resting in one of the school offices.
The Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports has policies in place to support girls who give birth during their exams, allowing them to continue their education and reducing the risk of school dropouts. This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to promote girls’ education across the country.
