A senior police officer was fatally struck by a suspected reckless driver who is currently on the run.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Obed Wachgiu, Officer-in-Charge of Kiwanga Police Post in Mukono Division, was killed alongside two others when a motorist overtook another car in Kiwanga Trading Centre, leading to a tragic accident.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Saturday. ASP Wachgiu was riding a police motorcycle, while the two other victims, including the area defense secretary, were on another motorcycle.

The driver, identified as a local businessman named Robert, was driving a white Subaru Forester with registration number UBM 123L. While overtaking, he swerved into the opposite lane, colliding with two motorcycles—one with registration UP 8064 Yamaha, and the other UFW 742F Bajaj Boxer. After the collision, the driver lost control, hit an electric pole, abandoned his vehicle, and fled the scene.

ASP Wachgiu was initially taken to Pearl Clinic in Kiwanga, then referred to Gwattiro Hospital in Bweyogerere, and later to China Friendship Hospital due to his critical condition. He was ultimately transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The two other victims suffered minor injuries and were admitted to different medical facilities.

Police have launched a search for the suspect, who faces charges of reckless driving. Authorities are urging the driver to surrender to police custody before further resources are employed to locate him.

A resident of Kiwanga described the deceased officer as a friendly and dedicated individual, known for assisting locals, even escorting them home late at night.
