Seven people lost their lives, and eight others were critically injured early Thursday morning in a tragic accident on the Jinja-Iganga Highway in Kakira. The crash involved a local commuter minibus, a “Drone,” colliding with a parked sugarcane truck around 3:00 AM.
The minibus, a Toyota Hiace (registration UBP 574J) traveling from Iganga, veered off its course and struck the rear of the stationary sugarcane lorry (registration UAF 333B). Witnesses reported that the minibus was speeding at the time, and the impact was devastating. Six people died instantly, and the remaining passengers suffered severe injuries.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, transporting the injured to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for immediate treatment. According to Kiira Region Traffic Officer Mable Asingwire, the six deceased were found at the scene, and their bodies were taken to the hospital mortuary for identification.
The accident occurred along a dangerous stretch of the Jinja-Iganga Highway, notorious for frequent crashes.
