OCEANSIDE, Calif.—A resident shot and killed a home invasion suspect, the Oceanside Police Department said on July 30.

At 7:22 p.m. July 29, the Oceanside Police Department received a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 4100 block of Diamond Circle, Officer Heather Mitchell said. Oceanside is a city in the North County of San Diego.

The residents were home when a man entered their backyard armed with a rock and a stick, the officer said. The suspect entered the residence through a bedroom slider door and a woman was inside the bedroom.

“The suspect threw a rock at a male resident of the home, striking him in the face,” Mitchell said. “The male resident retrieved a firearm and shot the suspect.”

Officers arrived on scene, along with Oceanside Fire Department personnel, and despite attempted life-saving measures, the suspect died of his injuries, Mitchell said.

Detectives from the Oceanside Police Department Crimes of Violence Unit were investigating the home invasion and shooting. Names of the victims and suspect were not immediately released.
