State Minister for defence, Sarah Mateke dies at 50

Sarah Mateke Nyirabashiki, the Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, has passed away. Her family confirmed that Mateke died of a suspected heart attack on her way to hospital​.

“We were on our way to Mulago Hospital,” said her father Philemon Mateke.

Mr Mateke, 81, served as a State Minister for Regional Affairs.

The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon Dr Chris Baryomunsi conformed the sad news, announcing that burial arrangements will be communicated.

“Am sad to announce the death of Hon Sarah Mateke, Woman MP, Kisoro District and Minister of state for Defence, Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs. May the good Lord comfort the family and rest her soul in eternal peace. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course,” he posted on X.

Sarah Mateke, born on July 15, 1974, in Chahi, Kisoro District, was known for her strong dedication to public service.

She had a diverse career as a politician, educationist, and philanthropist, serving multiple terms in parliament. She was also involved in empowering underprivileged children through her Nyirabashitsi Foundation, which provided educational opportunities​

Her contributions as Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs were significant, especially in shaping Uganda’s security policies.

Previously she served as the State for Gender, Labour and Social Development.
