A group of lawyers are facing a court deadline to respond to allegations of theft and mismanagement of Shs4.0 billion from a cooperative society. The allegations were brought forth by the cooperative society, which represents thousands of members, claiming that the lawyers used their positions to divert funds meant for the members for personal gain.

According to court documents, the lawyers allegedly used false accounting and documentation to conceal the theft. The cooperative society claims that the lawyers abused their offices and breached their fiduciary duties to the members.

Justice Patricia Mutesi, presiding over the case, has emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in the management of cooperative funds. “The members of the cooperative society have a right to know how their funds are being used,” she stated.

The court has given the lawyers a deadline to respond to the allegations and provide documentation to support their claims. The lawyers are required to provide detailed accounts of the cooperative’s funds, including receipts, invoices, and bank statements.

Failure to comply with the court’s order may result in severe consequences, including criminal charges and disbarment. The cooperative society is seeking a full refund of the allegedly stolen funds, as well as damages and costs.

The case highlights the need for robust oversight and regulation of cooperative societies to prevent financial malfeasance and protect members’ interests. It also underscores the importance of ethical conduct among legal professionals and the need for accountability in the management of clients’ funds.

The court’s decision is expected to set a precedent for the management of cooperative societies and the role of legal professionals in overseeing their finances.
