The Karuma Bridge, connecting the Acholi, West Nile, and Lango regions, will be fully closed to traffic starting September 23, 2024, for critical repairs. Structural defects discovered in the bridge have made the repairs necessary.
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) expects the work, including the demolition of the concrete deck, to take around three months. In May, the bridge was partially closed to buses and trailers due to safety concerns.
During the closure, alternative routes have been arranged for motorists. Those traveling from Kampala to Gulu and West Nile can take the Luweero-Kafu-Masindi-Para route, where an additional ferry will assist with water crossings.
Travelers to Lira can use the Rwenkunye-Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry or the Iganga Nakalama-Tirinyi-Pallisa Kumi-Soroti route. Another option for those heading to West Nile is the route through Murchison Falls National Park, subject to certain conditions.
