A deadly accident happened at Kasanvu along the Mutukula–Kyotera road involving two vehicles, a police Land Cruiser with registration UP 2914 T and a Mercedes Benz trailer with registration T824 DXF/T529 EFJ.
The crash took place at about 4:00 AM. Reports said the police patrol vehicle had stopped near a checkpoint with officers inside when a speeding trailer coming from the same direction lost control and rammed into it. The heavy truck landed on top of the police vehicle, killing the driver instantly and leaving three other officers with injuries.
Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura explained that the trailer was not being driven by its official driver but by the turn-man, while the real driver was resting at the time of the crash. He added that the turn-man had been arrested, while the main driver was still on the run and police were trying to find him.
Kananura also said drivers should stop the habit of letting turn-men learn on the job. He warned that giving untrained people control of heavy trucks puts their lives and the lives of other road users in great danger.
