A Ugandan woman has painfully opened up about her failed relationship with her Chinese lover.

Joyce Chebet Fatuma recalled the hopeless moment her lover left when she was one week pregnant with her son, Isaiah Kiplangat Chan. That was the beginning of her troublesome life as she struggled with poverty, trying to fend for herself and the baby.

“When Chan was very young, I slept in the church with him. Life was tough, but I left everything to God. That is how we started life, and we have continued until now. You can work from 6am to 6pm only to be paid Ugx 1000; at that time, I had nowhere to sleep. We used to survive on street water,” she said.

Luckily, with the help of well-wishers, Kiplangat was lucky to join the school and get access to education. He got a scholarship at Joshua Cheptegei Junior School, where he is set to sit for his Primary Learning Education (PLE) examination.

He is a budding star who has assumed leadership roles in school, as he is the head boy, and he hopes to keep his fire burning.

“He is a very disciplined boy, hardworking in class, and as the headteacher, I am optimistic he will be among the best candidates as per the PLE results,” Isaac Kwemboi, the headteacher, stated.

Beyond his smile, Kiplangat has the daunting task of finding his father, who abandoned him when he was in his mum’s womb. “I want to see my dad because I feel bad when I see other people calling their fathers,” he said.

All Kiplangat holds on to is a necklace his mum was given by his father before he disappeared.

I always see the pain in the eyes of this boy whenever journalists interview him.

I think some some questions shouldn’t be put to this boy at this age, rather messages of encouragement. Even the mother should be counselled to desist from lamenting and exhibiting despair to the boy.
