KAMPALA, Uganda | Xinhua | Uganda’s star netball player Mary Cholhok Nuba has signed for Australian side Queensland Firebirds.
The 27-year-old goal-shooter, who helped Uganda finish 5th in the Netball World Cup 2023, announced the new development on Wednesday.
She joins Queensland Firebirds in the Suncorp Super Netball from English Super League (ESL) club Loughborough Lightning.
“I am so excited to be joining the Firebirds. It has always been my dream to play in the best League in the world,” Nuba, who has been one of the best shooters in England, told Xinhua. In South Africa last year, Nuba scored 185 goals to be the top scorer for Uganda as they finished fifth at the World Cup.
Nuba becomes the second Ugandan star to ever play in the Super Netball League in Australia, after former national team captain and defender Peace Proscovia.
Fred Mugerwa, Uganda National Netball team long serving coach told Xinhua that Nuba’s move to the League in Australia is a huge step in the right direction. “Playing in one of the best Leagues in the world will be a good ground for Nuba to keep developing as a player,” added Mugerwa. ■
