UPDF Soldier Arrested over Shooting Three Civilians Dead in Agago

Private Bonny Ameny

The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) 5th Infantry Division has captured Private Bonny Ameny, the primary suspect in a recent shooting in Agago District that resulted in three fatalities and two injuries.

Private Ameny, who reportedly abandoned his post at Lokum Detach, was detained on Wednesday during a coordinated operation in Agago District. The suspect allegedly went to Ngora East Village, Ngora Parish, Paimol Sub-County, where he opened fire on October 20, 2024.

The attack tragically claimed the lives of Sunday Apiyo, 21, Santino Santino, 47, and Florence Ajalo, 16. Two survivors, Charles Kidega Kumakech, 47, and Janet Apiyo, 20, are currently recovering from their injuries.

According to UPDF officials, Ameny surrendered without resistance, handing over his weapon prior to his arrest near Omia Pacha. The 5th Division Court Martial has already begun the process to formally charge him, and proceedings will take place in Paimol, aiming to ensure transparency and accessibility for the affected community.
