URA Seizes Shs100m Worth of Smuggled Goods in Sting Operation

In a well-coordinated 12-hour operation, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) enforcement team intercepted goods valued at over Shs100 million aboard MV Pemba at Port Bell, Luzira. The intelligence-driven anti-smuggling mission, conducted from September 9 to 10, 2024, showcased the efficiency of strategic surveillance.

As part of efforts to raise UGX 31.37 trillion to support national economic growth, the URA underscored the importance of public participation in fighting revenue loss. Acting on a tip-off, URA’s Team One Enforcement swiftly intercepted an uncustomed consignment from Nyanza. Customs officials boarded the ferry from Tanzania, surprising the smugglers.

Guided by URA’s water marshals, the vessel was escorted to port, where the contraband goods were seized and taken to Nakawa Headquarters for verification. The confiscated items included motor vehicle parts, household goods, food products, and cosmetics. The nine consignments, linked to nine suspects, are now secured in the Customs warehouse. This operation highlights the crucial role of intelligence in combating smuggling and recovering lost revenue for the country.
