The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) reported Tuesday that one of its rangers stationed in the Kidepo Valley Conservation Area (KVCA) was killed by suspected poachers while on duty. Pte Jonathan Olara lost his life during an encounter with alleged poachers while patrolling the Karenga Community Wildlife Area, UWA confirmed.
UWA expressed its commitment to intensify efforts in combating poaching and illegal activities that endanger Uganda’s wildlife and ecosystems. The organization emphasized its ongoing dedication to protecting conservation areas and collaborating with local communities, government authorities, and conservation partners to preserve wildlife and its habitats for the benefit of Ugandans.
The suspected shooters are reportedly on the run, and police have launched an investigation into the incident. UWA highlighted that this tragic event underscores the risks faced by conservation staff, particularly in areas prone to illegal wildlife activities, further emphasizing the importance of UWA’s role in safeguarding the nation’s natural resources.
Pte Olara is the second ranger to be killed within a month. On September 30, another deadly confrontation took place in Mt. Elgon National Park in Eastern Uganda, where UWA ranger Dismas Makilio and a civilian, Christopher Nabaya, were both killed. The confrontation arose after Makilio encountered Nabaya, a resident of Chenwach Cell, allegedly in possession of timber within the park. When Nabaya resisted arrest, the situation escalated, leading both to fall off a cliff during a pursuit, resulting in their deaths.
