Residents of Zombo Town Council in Zombo District were left in shock after an 18-year-old man took his own life by self-immolation on November 2, 2024, at Uwope Cell, Abira East Ward.
The deceased, identified as Sunday Omirambe, had reportedly been dealing with ongoing domestic conflicts with family members, according to some neighbors.
Michael Asiri, the LCI chairperson of Uwope Cell, confirmed the incident and noted that Omirambe had been struggling with mental health issues. Early Saturday morning, Omirambe set fire to three huts on the property before locking himself inside his own house and setting it ablaze.
An eyewitness from Zombo Town Council reported that Omirambe and all the possessions in the house were burned beyond recognition.
Ismael Odubi Avur, a security head and advisor in the office of the prime minister of the Alur Kingdom, expressed regret over the tragic event and urged the community to show care and compassion toward individuals with mental health challenges.
Mike Joram Anyolitho, the District Councillor of Zombo Town Council, called for calm as investigations into the matter continue.
By press time, police from the Zombo Police Post had visited the scene to retrieve the body and conduct further inquiries.
The incident has drawn comparisons to a similar tragedy in 2021 at Arutha Cell, Oturgang Ward, Paidha Town Council, where a couple died in a self-immolation incident after locking themselves in their home.
