A fuel tanker has caught fire this morning along the Mityana-Kampala highway near Kiwawu Tea Estate, causing major traffic disruption. The inferno has blocked half of the road, making it impassable for motorists traveling in both directions.
Authorities have since deployed traffic officers to the scene to control the situation and ensure the safety of road users. Meanwhile, the fire brigade is working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Speaking about the incident, SP Kananura Michael, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, urged motorists to exercise patience as emergency services work to clear the area.
“We urge all drivers to cooperate with traffic officers on the ground and use alternative routes where possible,” he said.
Fuel tanker accidents have been a recurring safety concern in Uganda, with previous incidents leading to casualties and road closures. Experts have consistently called for stricter regulations on fuel transportation to minimize risks.
As the situation unfolds, authorities have advised travelers to avoid the area until the fire is completely extinguished and the road fully reopened. Further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
