A suspected machete-wielding robber is currently receiving treatment at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital after being attacked by a mob that accused him of attempting to rob a pedestrian.
Authorities identified the suspect as Joseph Elungat.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 PM on Wednesday at Moruapesur Rock in Soroti City’s East Division. Elungat, along with two others, allegedly targeted a pedestrian returning home from work.
The intended victim reportedly fought back, drawing the attention of nearby residents. Elungat and his accomplices tried to flee, but the victim pursued Elungat, eventually catching and overpowering him. The victim reportedly disarmed Elungat, turning the machete against him in self-defense until the mob intervened.
Local residents claim the machete-wielding gang has been terrorizing the area, using various dark spots to launch their attacks.
The chairperson of Cell B, LC One, Francis Oriokot, was notified of the incident after police arrived at the scene.
The East Kyoga police spokesperson, Edison Obukulem, confirmed that investigations into the incident have been launched and warned the public against mob justice, emphasizing that such actions are illegal and violate human rights.
